Jugalbandhi: Village Dreamscapes

date & time Friday, July 5 @ 7:30 pm - 10:30 pm

location Ocean Art Works Pavilion, Granville Island

tickets $20-$45
The image features an abstract and vibrant background with predominantly red and teal overlays. On the left, there is a dancing crowd, a tapestry, and cloud-like formations, and a bright red, curved streak of neon light across the bottom edge. The words "Jugalbandhi Village Dreamscapes" is in bold white text and on the right, the image is overlayed with translucent teal circles and confetti.

Immerse yourself in spontaneous dreamscapes which burst into life through fusions of music, dance and art. This event reimagines a traditional jugalbandhi—known for playful Indian classical music or dance duets—while pushing the boundaries with artists who embody the surreal, futuristic and otherworldly. The evening offers high-energy improvisations that will entrance audiences and performers, collectively striving to create a ‘utopian’ village.

Meet the Artists:

• Hasheel: A master bansuri player and classical vocalist, who bridges South Asian classical music with the bold textures of electronic beats and hip hop. Former student of the legendary Hariprasad Chaurasia and renowned singer Ajay Pohankar.

• Simziez: A Punjabi and Marathi street dance artist who captivates with her unique blend of waacking and contemporary dance set to Desi music. Through freestyle and creation, she uncovers the complex layers of what it means to be a South Asian woman.

• Curtis Andrews: A percussionist/composer with global flair who channels the rhythms of West Africa, South India and jazz through his performances. Armed with a PhD in Ethnomusicology, Curtis brings scholarly depth to his vibrant, boundary-crossing musical explorations.

• Kimira Reddy: As a multidisciplinary artist, Kimira’s portfolio is a mosaic of immersive virtual reality experiences, exhibition designs, and art installations. She continues to push the boundaries as she contributes her artistry to the theatre, film and dance.

Join us for a fluid exploration of art forms, where the past meets the possible and the imagination knows no bounds.

The Space:

This event mixes the rustic charm of a “village panchayat” with edgy retro-futuristic aesthetics. This fusion creates a space where the cycles of life and death, yin and yang, and the echoes of ancient and future worlds coalesce into a night of unforgettable performances.

* Due to unforeseen circumstances, Osheen Siva will no longer be able to join us. We will announce the new artist soon!
