Walia has played a central role in building some of North America’s most innovative, diverse, and effective new movements. That this brilliant organizer and theorist has found time to share her wisdom in [Undoing Border Imperialism] is a tremendous gift to us all.

–  Naomi Klein

Two powerhouse activists pushing against the expectations to behave like a model minority cut through the noise in this honest conversation about compassionate leadership, institutional accountability and transparency, and decolonization. They share what drives them to continue to fight for the things that matter to them, and the people they love.

Award-winning author of ‘Undoing Border Imperialism’ and ‘Border and Rule’, Harsha Walia has been an activist and writer for over two decades. Formally trained as a lawyer, she co-founded one of Canada’s most prolific migrant justice movements, No One Is Illegal, and has served on the Women’s Memorial March Committee. Among her many accolades, she is most recently the 2022 Conrad M. Arensberg Award recipient. Described by Naomi Klein as a writer of “dazzling ambition,” her work spans themes of deportation, incarceration, land claims, privacy and consent, and education.

Anjali Appadurai‘s climate justice career has focused on issues of fossil fuel accountability in British Columbia. She is known for her speech at the 2011 United Nations Climate Change Conference as a college student, which went viral. In 2021, she ran for the NDP in the federal election in Vancouver Granville and came within 450 votes of becoming an MP. She is now the director of campaigns at the Climate Emergency Unit. She founded the Padma Centre for Climate Justice, which brings young people from Global South diasporas and immigrant communities together around transformative climate policy solutions.

This conversation is facilitated by interdisciplinary arts organizer and curator Anoushka Ratnarajah.
