World-renowned mridangam maestro Dr. Trichy Sankaran returns to Vancouver to perform with his long-time disciple Curtis Andrews and his ensemble, The Offering of Curtis Andrews.
The last time this combination occurred in Vancouver was at a sold-out concert in 2018, which received rave reviews. COVID-derailed a planned CD release concert at the Indian Summer Festival in 2020. Finally, the stars have aligned (and restrictions have eased!) enabling this meeting of master and student (and his friends) once again.
The repertoire of the concert will be original music by Dr. Sankaran (mridangam, kanjira) and Andrews (drumset), including several items featured on Andrews’ recently released and critically-acclaimed album Speaking Hands (2021), which also features the playing of Dr. Sankaran. Other artists in the concert will be Carnatic musicians Vidyasagar Vankayala (voice) and Kaushik Sivaramakrishnan (violin), and luminaries from Vancouver’s jazz/world music scene: Jared Burrows (guitar), Robin Layne (vibraphone) and David Spidel (bass).
Expect virtuosic rhythms, mesmerizing melodics, and dynamic group interplay and improvisation in an Indo-jazz style, done with taste.
