ISF 2019 featured-artist: Sara Khan

Indian Summer Festival is delighted to announce Sara Khan as this year’s featured artist. Each year, the festival invites an inspiring artist to create a commissioned artwork in response to the festival theme. The work they make then sets the visual language of the entire festival. Khan responded to the 2019 theme of “Tricksters, Magicians & Oracles.” with a painting titled ‘Dancer’ with a human figure and an animal head, evoking performance, shapeshifting and transformation.

More about Sara Khan

Sara Khan was born in Birmingham, England, raised in Lahore, Pakistan, and lives and works in Vancouver. Her works have been featured in several national and international group exhibitions. She was selected as one among 13 international artists for the Bag Art camp, an international art residency in Bergen, Norway (2012). She was also chosen to be a part of the 13 Satellites of Lahore, a public art workshop held at the Annemarie Schimmel Haus, Lahore (2006). Her latest exhibition ‘Suraj Kinare’ an Urdu phrase meaning “at the edge of the sun,” is a series of poetic paintings evoking the artist’s own sense of identity, suspended between the cultures of her upbringing in Pakistan and her home in Canada. Suraj Kinare is on at the Surrey Art Gallery from Jun 29, 2019 – Aug 31, 2019, with an artist’s talk presented in collaboration with Indian Summer Festival on July 11, 2019.

Art and thoughts

Sara Khan’s creations scrutinize the repulsion and beauty found in common spaces and situations and questions the normalcy of the seemingly mundane matters in life. Khan’s interests are in the interconnection between the self, society, history, geography, and culture.
