Minelle Mahtani

Minelle Mahtani is an Associate Professor at the Institute for Social Justice, UBC. She currently also serves as the Inaugural Senior Advisor to the Provost on Racialized Faculty. For the last 14 years, she has taught in the department of human geography, and the program in journalism at University of Toronto, Scarborough. She is former President of the Association of Canadian Studies and the winner of the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee award. She is a former national television news journalist with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and a former associate producer with “Canada: A People’s History.” She is the author of “Mixed Race Amnesia: Resisting the Romanticization of Multiraciality” (UBC Press) and is one of the editors of the book, “Global Mixed Race” (NYU Press). For the last three years, she has hosted a radio programme entitled “Sense of Place” at Roundhouse Radio, 98.3 Vancouver. As a radio host, she won several awards, including a British Columbia Association of Broadcasters award and a Canadian Ethnic Media Association award for best radio host. She was awarded a media achievement award from the Association of American Geographers this year, and also won the AAG’s Enhancing Diversity award for supporting the enhancement of diversity, equity and inclusion in geography.
