ISF2021
June 17-July 17
FESTIVAL THEME: SHAPESHIFTING
EVENTS: 13
ARTISTS: 91
ATTENDEES: 180,500 audience members engaged from 11 countries and 4 continents
The theme of this year’s festival was ‘Shapeshifting’. Shapeshifting felt like what we needed to save us—from the failure of our own structures, from the frightening politics of domination around the world, and to help us transcend this moment. Who better to look to than artists, who are often consummate shapeshifters?
ISF2021 featured virtual concerts, literary conversations, and short films showcasing some of the most exciting creative minds—from Grammy Award and Booker Prize nominees to tomorrow’s stars. This year had a strong focus on our treasured ecosystem of local artists, restaurants, and markets, aiming to knit the community closer together and support one another through a difficult time. At the same time, we retained our international reach, with stellar guest artists joining virtually from San Francisco, Dubai, London, and Lahore.
The festival offered a mix of virtual and hybrid experiences with immersive elements designed to bridge the gap in human connection that so many were feeling. We presented on-demand virtual events, a self-guided walking tour, an immersive ‘sound bath’ experience, and even door-delivered food—bringing the festival to audiences in a multitude of ways.
Our incredible team worked hard to build a festival on shifting ground. We hoped it opened up spaces of joy, as well as space for difficult and necessary conversations. It was a true pleasure to be together in a virtual community.
