“One of the top 10 parties to look forward to!” – 24 Hrs
Opening Gala: The Great Railway Food Bazaar
with Vikram Vij & Special Guests
Glamorous guests, fine sips and delectable nibbles curated by Vikram Vij – the Indian Summer Festival Opening Gala is one of the city’s most sought after summer parties. For our 5th anniversary, the Opening Gala moves to Roundhouse Community Centre, and transforms into The Great Railway Food Bazaar, in a tribute to the Roundhouse’s history as the home of Canada’s great steam locomotives.
Vikram Vij challenges some of Vancouver’s top chefs to create Indian-inspired street food. Bringing to life the railway station theme is the work of award-winning art director Aradhana Seth (The Darjeeling Limited). The evening also features a lively outdoor stage featuring special musical acts: The Dreamtree Project with Juno-nominated electronic music maestro Adham Shaikh, sitar virtuoso Uwe Neumann and Gurpreet Chana aka ‘The Tabla Guy’; the Surya Brass Band, one of the few traditional Indian-style brass bands in North America; and Rup Sidhu returns to spin folk, classical and hip hop music from around the world. The event will be hosted by CBC’s Miyoung Lee.
Make a stop at each station with these culinary conductors:
Vikram Vij – Vij’s/My Shanti
Frank Pabst – Blue Water Café
Abhishek Roy – Atithi
Tai Keattivanichvily – Bob Likes Thai Food
Tim Cuff – West Oak
Vij’s Railway Express Food Truck
James Coleridge – Bella Gelateria
VIA Rail is giving guests at the Opening Gala a chance to continue your train journey by entering a raffle draw to two round-trip tickets to Jasper worth $5,000.
Ticket includes food and a complimentary beverage.
Please Note: Guests are advised to not enter through the main community centre entrance. Our gala entrance will be through the Roundhouse’s Turntable Plaza, located on Davie Street across from Urban Fare.
